NERDS & NITWITS HELP CENTER
Send Us an S O S
WELCOME to the help center, the heart of Newbies and Nitwits.
Most of you are probably familiar with some form of technical support, and perhaps your experiences have been memorable - for all the wrong reasons. You have to deal with long periods on hold, poorly trained support personnel and, if your warranty has expired, you may have had to pay an outrageous fee.

Your computer manufacturer will usually balk at offering help with a software problem, and will refer you to the manufacturer of specific components in your pc. A software manufacturer will insist it's your hardware that's causing the problem, leading to a vicious cycle of expensive phone calls and lost time before the problem is resolved satisfactorily.

A SOLUTION

At Newbies and Nitwits we hope to offer a better solution - support for hardware, software, and general information in one easy to use location. We intend to offer different levels of service ranging from free email support for simple questions, to telephone support for a detailed walk-through of the solution, for which a fee will be raised.

Over the years, I've learned the ins and outs of computers, including common problems with Windows, finding and fixing hardware catastrophes, installing and 'tweaking' new software so that it does what it's supposed to do. I know first-hand how frustrating it is to suddenly have something go terribly wrong with your computer, when you have no idea how to fix it. Judging by the number of emails, phone calls, and visits I get from people who are at their wits end, I know there's definitely a need for a web site like Newbies and Nitwits.

For now, we're limited to a simple, support option. If you have a problem just email us, and we'll send you a response within 24 hours under most circumstances. I will make every effort to answer all requests for help totally without charge. For those of you who prefer true one-on-one contact where I actually walk you through procedures, we'll offer some type of telephone support.

If you have a technical support question, please use the link below to submit it. I look forward to helping you! Pam Allen

Some Quick 'Cures' for Troublesome PCs

Have you?
  1. Made sure everything is plugged in and turned on?

  2. Checked the settings to make sure nothing has been disabled?

  3. Searched the help file or manual for help?

  4. Restarted your computer?

  5. Reinstalled the offending program?

  6. Tried another program, diskette or cd to make sure the one you are using is not defective?

  7. Contacted 'tech' support if you're still in warranty?
Then, if necessary, try the suggestions on the right but only if you understand what Pam is telling you to do!
  • If hardware is not performing correctly, remove it from the device management screen and let Windows re-detect it.

  • Physically disconnect hardware, restart, then reconnect it.

  • See if malfunctioning item works on someone else's computer.

  • Borrow a friend's item and see if it works on your computer.

  • If it's a Windows problem, check for updates and patches on Microsoft's site.

  • Check for software/memory conflicts caused by too many programs loading at Start Up by running msconfig. (Not for the novice)

  • Look in Device Manager for yellow exclamation points signifying hardware conflicts.
